Ko Samet - let's take a look!

Discover Ko Samet (Thai: เกาะเสม็ด), a stunning island nestled in the Gulf of Thailand just off the coast of the Rayong province. Situated approximately 220 km southeast of bustling Bangkok and a mere hour's drive from vibrant Pattaya, Ko Samet offers a captivating escape.

The island's name is derived from the lush cajeput trees that grace its landscape, with "samet" being the Thai word for cajeput (known formally in Thai as ต้นเสม็ดขาว). Over time, Ko Samet has also been affectionately called Ko Kaew Phitsadan, or even earned the enchanting moniker, "Magic Crystal Island."

A Haven for Travelers: Ko Samet has become a favorite among international tourists and a cherished weekend haven for Bangkok residents seeking a serene retreat. Much of the island, excluding the Na Dan area, is encompassed by the Khao Laem Ya - Mu Ko Samet National Park. Designated as a National Park in 1981 by the Royal Forest Department, the Samet archipelago, along with nine other quaint islands, the Khao Laem Ya headland, and the scenic 11-kilometer Mae Rampeung Beach, are all under the protective umbrella of the National Parks Division of the Thai Government.

Getting There and Around: Travel to Ko Samet is conveniently arranged through the Ban Phe local port along the coastline. For those coming from Bangkok, buses are a popular choice, departing from the Eastern Bus Terminal and the Ekamai bus station. The journey from Bangkok to Ban Phe takes roughly 3 and a half hours. With the island a mere 7 km offshore, boats offer a relaxed and enjoyable 30-minute voyage from Ban Phe to Ko Samet.

Island Charm and Landscape: Spanning around 13.1 square kilometers, Ko Samet boasts a unique "T" shape. Its north-south length stretches approximately 7 km, while its east-west width measures 4 km.

Na Dan, known as Ko Samet Village, lies closest to the Rayong coast. This charming island port village is a gateway to Hat Sai Gaew, Ko Samet's longest and most popular beach. The island's eastern shore is adorned with most of its beaches, including Ao Phai, Ao Wai, Ao Kui Na Nai, Ao Cho, Ao Kui Na Nok, Ao Vong Duern, Cape Khut, Ao Toei, and Ao Korang at the southern tip. The western shore features Ao Prao, while just off the southern tip are three captivating rock-islands: Ko Jan (Moon Island), Ko San Chalam (Shark Fin Island), and Hin Khao (White Rock).

A Unique Climate: Ko Samet stands out as one of Thailand's driest archipelagoes, receiving significantly less rainfall than its neighboring Rayong Province. While its "rainy season" spans from May to July, even during this period, Ko Samet experiences less precipitation than other Thai islands. Despite its arid conditions, the island flourishes with lush forested hills adorned with evergreen and deciduous trees, along with abundant cajeput trees. To ensure a steady water supply, Ko Samet imports potable water due to the scarcity of rainfall.

Rich in History: Immerse yourself in the island's history as you explore the shores that inspired the classical Thai Poet, Sunthorn Phu (1786-1855). Part of his epic masterpiece, Phra Aphai Mani, unfolds against the backdrop of Ko Samet. Statues of the title character, Prince Aphai Mani, and the siren/mermaid that guided him to the island can be admired on the Hat Sai Gaew beach.
